Mail Server
  or  ListServer
An electronic mailing list (sometimes written as elist or e-list) is a special usage of e-mail that allows for widespread distribution of information to many Internet users by inserting only one name, the List or Group name, into the addressee (To) blank.
 It is similar to a traditional mailing list — a LIST of names and addresses, or a Group Mail list.
A Mail List or ListServer typically refers to four things:
1. A list of e-mail addresses;
2. The people ("subscribers") receiving mail at those addresses;
3. The publications (e-mail messages) sent to those addresses;
4. A reflector, which is a single e-mail address that, when designated as the recipient of a message, will send a copy of that message to all of the subscribers.

The list of subscribers, or list members, is stored at a site remote from your computer, on a Server.
When the ListServer receives an e-mail, it searches the mailer database, and sends each subscriber (member) a copy of the e-mail.
The subscribing member will only see the name of the message originator (person sending it) and the name of the List.
    (No long lists of everyone receiving the e-mail)

Types of mailing lists

1. Announcement list, which is a one-way only form of messaging and can only be "posted to" by selected people.
This may also be referred to by the term newsletter.

2. Discussion list, in which any subscriber may post.
    On a discussion list, a subscriber uses the mailing list to send messages to all the other subscribers, who may answer in similar fashion. Mailing lists of this type are usually topic-oriented (for example, politics, scientific discussion, joke contests), and the topic can range from extremely narrow to "whatever you think could interest us". (They are similar to Usenet newsgroups,  but utilize standard e-mail procedures.),  and share the same aversion to off-topic messages. The term discussion group encompasses both these types of lists and newsgroups.

On both discussion lists and newsletter lists precautions are taken to avoid spamming.  Only an approved member or subscriber may post to the "Oldgleaner" mailing lists.  These are private lists, which means that the list of members is not available to non-members.
The "Oldgleaner" lists  require an approval from the list owner (admin) before one can join.
Joining a mailing list is called "subscribing" and leaving a list is called "unsubscribing".

Subscribing to a Mailing List

Subscribe to a mailing list by filling out the on-line form. You will be sent an email requesting confirmation, to prevent others from gratuitously subscribing you.  Follow the directions in the e-mail to confirm the subscription.
        Note: The list owner or administrator (admin) may subscribe or unsubscribe a member. The admin may also block or deny posting privileges to provide security to the list members.

There are two ownership roles associated with each mailing list. The list administrators are the people who have ultimate control over all parameters of the mailing list. They are able to change any list configuration variable available through the administration web pages.

The list moderators have more limited permissions; they are not able to change any list configuration variable, but they are allowed to tend to pending administration requests, including approving or rejecting held subscription requests, and disposing of held postings. Of course, the list administrators can also tend to pending requests.

Security
An attempt by a non-list member (i.e., a Spammer) to post to the list email address will trigger an alert to the List Administrator or Moderator(s) who them may (sometimes) approve the distribution, or delete the email and/or deny the addressee from even that limited access.

Digest Options
Members are provided the option to receive each individual e-mail as soon as it is received and processed (Non-Digest) or Digest, where the e-mails are held for a specified time before being delivered.  All of the day's (or selected time frame) messages are then sent in one long email, bundled together. This works for some people on very high volume lists, but,  consider that the Digest  option may delay delivery on time-critical messages, and is not recommended on low-volume mail lists.

Mailing to a ListServer List
Prepare your e-mail message as you normally do, in your regular e-mail agent. Insert the address name of the Mailing List in the To: blank.
If you wish to send the same e-mail message to persons who are not members of the mailing list, that is OK, but their name(s) will appear in the e-mail header - unless you use the BCC addressing option (Preferred). Additional names are not addressed by the ListServer reflector.

Managing Your Membership
If you ever want to unsubscribe or change your options (eg, switch to
or from digest mode, change your password, etc.), visit your
subscription page.
E-mail Footer
Mail processed through a Mailing List or ListServer will display the name of the Mailing List,  the URL to generate a new e-mail, and a URL  to visit the Mailing List Management page.
You can also make such adjustments via email by sending a message to:

your_mail_list_name-request@oldgleaner.com

with the word `help' in the subject or body (don't include the
quotes), and you will get back a message with instructions.

You must know your password to change your options (including changing
the password, itself) or to unsubscribe.
(Keep the e-mail that you receive with your subscription confirmation)
There is also a button on your options page that will email your current password to you.
Message Archives
A Mailing List Archive is a collection of past messages from the electronic mailing lists. The  archives often include searching and indexing functionality. The "Oldgleaner"  archives are directly associated with the mailing list.

Murphy's Law

A very necessary and oft-quoted axiom - an accepted truth, dictum, truism, principle; maxim, adage, aphorism -  Simply put, it states:

If anything can go wrong, it will . . . At the worst possible moment!

IPIO
There is a corollary known as IPIO - The Innate Perversity of Inanimate Objects.

That is the nature of the final screw to fall into the device being reassembled. Or, a slice of bread to fall buttered-side down.
The 'watched pot' that doesn't boil, or the printer/copier that can sense that you are in a hurry, and jams!

Computers are very sensitive devices. And the corollary of GIGO is also TRUE:

GIGO -  Garbage In, Garbage Out.  What you enter matters!!
